One of the joys of shopping in antique stores is finding some of those simpler toys where children play without electronics. Many love listening to a child playing “make-believe,” using their imaginations as they create their stories.
Although it’s been a while since we last posted, we have a wonderful assortment of books, games, and toys that encourage a child’s creativity while foregoing the screens and electronics! Many believe that a bit of boredom is actually good for a child’s development.
Here’s a gallery of some of the interesting children’s ideas available:
“Children are discoverers; they’re active,” she said. With simple toys, your child gets to use her imagination to build and develop. Instead of the toy telling your child what to do, your child commands the toy. Simple toys promote independence, creativity, critical thinking, and imagination. The more the toy does, the less your child is doing — both physically and mentally.

We encourage you to stop in and see if a book, game, or simple toy might be just what a youngster in your life might truly enjoy this summer!

What’s so funny about outer space? Thumb – and giggle – your way through these Star Trek ticklers and find out – as Captain Kirk, Mr. Spock, Dr. McCoy, Sulu, Uhura and the rest of the Earthlings, Vulcans, Klingons and outworlders cut up and cavort through a universe of fun!
from the back cover of Trek or Treat
Trek or Treat is a gag book, composed of photographs from various Star Trek episodes with humorous captions added.
We recently received a box of DC Star Trek Comics and a few other books/magazines with Star Trek articles. They are in good to great condition. Here’s an interesting article about the series created in the late 1980s:
Although DC continued to publish solid Star Trek stories after 1989, the first run of these comics was an era of experimentation and fun. If you’re a Trekkie, you probably would have caught yourself smiling during every issue.
Stop by today and peruse the latest Star Trek Comics for yourself or as a great holiday gift for someone special on your list. Yessirree… we’re here and we’re watchin’ for ya!
We received this amazing selection of The Alfred Hitchcock Mystery Series, featuring The Three Investigators: Jupiter “Jupe” Jones, Peter “Pete” Crenshaw, and Robert “Bob” Andrews. The series is for young teens. But the plots and suspense are intriguing.
We have about 20 of these books. The series, written between 1964 and 1987 is made up of 43 books. But in doing a search, it was a bit challenging to determine Alfred Hitchcock’s role in these books. Below is a quote that might tickle your interest:
The boys’ ages are never explicitly stated, though a safe bet would place them around thirteen or fourteen. While their youth would seem to be a detriment to crime fighting, the series manages to avoid the Lord of the Flies syndrome. Hitchcock is always there with funds or information, and while they can’t drive, the investigators have convenient access to unlimited use of an antique Rolls Royce sedan, complete with a British chauffeur (a gift from a grateful client, via Deus ex machina Rent a Car).
Still, they never rely on grown ups to solve the mysteries. It’s always Jupiter’s ingenuity, Pete’s bull-headed muscle, and Bob’s penchant for research that save the day.
Well, NO! Evidently, he was paid for the use of his name on the books. In researching, the answer is a bit challenging to find. This quote may help:
The Three Investigators were created by Robert Arthur, who wrote the first few books and then oversaw and edited the rest of the series. It was he who had the brainwave of having Alfred Hitchcock as the patron of the team. Hitch introduced each case, and often called them in to set them off on their latest adventure. It was this intrusion of real life into a fictional world that cemented my relationship with the Three Investigators. Could these stories possibly be true … ?
This is just one example of the intriguing books you’ll find at Bahoukas Antiques. So stop in today and browse. Maybe you’ll find a book or two that will encourage your young readers at home. And, of course, we’re here and we’re watchin’ for ya!

The Musical Jolly Chimp played a role as a security guard in Toy Story 3. We received one in excellent shape just this week. Ours is from the 70s and uses batteries. It works! Check out more details on the colorful, celebrity life of the Musical Jolly Chimp!
https://youtu.be/Ow8FuMvNT-E
We have a wonderful Musical Jolly Chimp – just like the crazy one in Toy Story 3
Did You Know?
This crazy monkey toy has been included in movies, books, and songs. Can you guess all of them before you read the following quote?
The cymbal banging monkey toy has appeared in the opening scene of Rebel Without a Cause in 1955, the 1977 Steven Spielberg film Close Encounters of the Third Kind, the 1988 horror film Monkey Shines, the 1996 film Merlin’s Shop of Mystical Wonders, the 2000 film How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000 film), the 2004 film Eurotrip, the 2007 film The Simpsons Movie, the 2010 Disney/Pixar animated film Toy Story 3 and the 2019 horror film Annabelle Comes Home.
It is also widely seen in the games Fallout 4 and Fallout 76, and features in horror writer Stephen King’s 1980 story The Monkey.
One also appears in the Wallace and Gromit 2008 short A Matter of Loaf and Death. A monkey with a bomb attached to its back features prominently in the Call of Duty franchise’s “Zombies” gamemode.
The 2006 Hot Chip song Over and Over references “a monkey with a miniature cymbal”.
The character Jinx from League of Legends has a big emotional connection to cymbal-banging monkeys. Other than explosions which give her happiness, cymbal-banging monkeys give her peace to her mentally ill mind. This connection can be seen in her starring 2021 animated series Arcane: League of legends.

Dads carried metal tins with lunch to their jobs in the coal mines and factories. Of course, it wasn’t long before their children wanted to copy their dads.
… the first commercial lunch boxes, which resembled metal picnic baskets decorated with scenes of playing children, came out in 1902.
The first lunch box decorated with a famous licensed character was introduced in 1935. Produced by Geuder, Paeschke & Frey, it featured Mickey Mouse, and was a four-color lithographed oval tin, with a pull-out tray inside. It had no vacuum bottle, but did have a handle.
In 1950, Aladdin Industries created the first children’s lunch box based on a television show, Hopalong Cassidy. The Hopalong Cassidy lunch kit, or “Hoppy”, quickly became Aladdin’s cash cow. Debuting in time for back-to-school 1950, it would go on to sell 600,000 units in its first year alone, each at US$2.39. In 1953, Roy Rogers and Dale Evans were featured on models introduced by American Thermos.

1881: The Fashion School Desk
The First Model
The first school desk was made in 1880 by John D. Loughlin in Sidney, Ohio. The desk, known as “The Fashion Desk,” proved to be extremely popular across the country. The practicality of the desks allowed for many to be put together in a one room schoolhouse, and the fashion aspect of it was aesthetically pleasing to those in the education industry. Loughlin’s marketing campaign also helped to sell these desks, which would eventually sweep the nation. The “Fashion Desks” were desks attached to one another and were big enough to seat two or three children. Usually, there was an inkwell so that the student could replenish his pen’s supply.
The Sidney School Furniture Company, located in Sidney, Ohio, began manufacturing the popular “Fashion” school desk in 1881. Advertising for the desk claimed, “No desk in the market is made with more care, nor of better materials than the ‘Fashion,’ and none has met with a more popular reception, or gives better satisfaction.” The desk featured a Patent T-head, which eliminated screws and bolts by joining the wood of the top, back, and seat to the legs, which were made of cast iron.
… with writing pad. These are solid and have a shelf on the bottom to place books and bags.

These very collectible radios – and they ALL WORK – include a 1950s Baseball Player Radio, a Panapet 1970s Red Ball Radio by Panasonic, a 1970s Snoopy Radio, and a 1998 promotional Pepsi Cola Radio.
Baseball Player Radio – 1970s
The Panapet radio is a round novelty radio on a chain, first produced by Panasonic in the early 1970s to commemorate the World Expo in Osaka. Two chrome plated dials on the surface are for tuning and volume, and a tuning display is inset on the surface of the ball. The Panapet is AM band only – no FM. There is a jack for a mono earplug. The Panapet came in several colors including red, yellow, white, blue, purple and avocado green.
The Snoopy AM Radio, 1970s, by Determined Productions, Inc.
Connie Boucher, a pioneer in licensing cartoon characters who provided the inspiration for “Happiness Is a Warm Puppy,” a best-selling 1962 book about Snoopy, the “Peanuts” comic strip character, has died at age 72.
Ms. Boucher, who died here Dec. 20 of complications following heart surgery, was a window dresser for I. Magnin in 1959 when she grew dissatisfied with the quality of coloring books available for her two sons. With her husband, Jim Young, she created a Winnie-the-Pooh coloring book, using a character that was in the public domain. The book sold 50,000 copies.
Two years later she founded Determined Productions Inc. to develop other products based on licensing characters. One of her first efforts was a calendar using the characters in the Charlie Brown comic strip.
The Pepsi-Cola Bottle Cap Radio is vintage 1998.
1998 was also the 100th Anniversary of the Pepsi-Cola brand. CLICK HERE for a bit of history. Do you know what Pepsi was originally named before being branded in 1898: See bottom of this post

I know some folks see comics as ‘wasting time.’ But the Classics Illustrated series offers recognized books in comic form. Everyone can enjoy the classics! In Britain, they’ve created Classical Comics, founded in 2007, offering selections that include Shakespeare and Dickins.
Classics Illustrated is an American comic book/magazine series featuring adaptations of literary classics such as Les Miserables, Moby-Dick, Hamlet, and The Iliad. Created by Albert Kanter, the series began publication in 1941 and finished its first run in 1969, producing 169 issues. Following the series’ demise, various companies reprinted its titles. Since then, the Classics Illustrated brand has been used to create new comic book adaptations. This series is different from the Great Illustrated Classics, which is an adaptation of the classics for young readers that includes illustrations, but is not in the comic book form.
