This Spanish Galleon Model Just Arrived

This beautiful model from a local estate just arrived this past week at Bahoukas. It’s an 18 gun, 3 masts with 15 sails.
Construction
Galleons were constructed from oak (for the keel), pine (for the masts) and various hardwoods for hull and decking. Hulls were usually carvel-built. The expenses involved in galleon construction were enormous. Hundreds of expert tradesmen (including carpenters, pitch-melters, blacksmiths, coopers, shipwrights, etc.) worked day and night for months before a galleon was seaworthy. To cover the expense, galleons were often funded by groups of wealthy businessmen who pooled resources for a new ship. Therefore, most galleons were originally consigned for trade, although those captured by rival states were usually put into military service.
The most common gun used aboard a galleon was the demi-culverin, although gun sizes up to demi-cannon were possible.
Because of the long periods often spent at sea and poor conditions on board, many of the crew often perished during the voyage; therefore advanced rigging systems were developed so that the vessel could be sailed home by an active sailing crew a fraction of the size aboard at departure. …From Wikipedia

This model is 51 inches long, 41 inches tall, and 8 inches wide. All wood. An absolutely exquisite model. We do not know who built her, but she’s a beauty!
The most distinguishing features of the galleon include the long prominent beak or beakhead followed by a fore-mast and main-mast, both noticeably taller than the single or double lateen-rigged mizzenmasts with their sloped lateen-rig yards, and below those the square Quarter gallery at the stern. On average with three masts, in larger galleons, a fourth mast was added, usually another lateen-rigged mizzen, called the bonaventure mizzen. …From Wikipedia

Here’s a wee bit closer view. She presently sits in our front window. Stop by and check her out. When the called Spanish Galleons – “Sea Castles” – it’s easy to understand when you see this model. Click this link for a little more history from Pirates & Privateers blog.
Of course, always amazing ‘finds’ at Bahoukas Antique Mall in Havre de Grace!

Poker and Horse Racing = Fun!
Poker is a family of card games that combine gambling, strategy, and skill. All poker variants involve betting as an intrinsic part of play, and determine the winner of each hand according to the combinations of players’ cards, at least some of which remain hidden until the end of the hand. Poker games vary in the number of cards dealt, the number of shared or “community” cards, the number of cards that remain hidden, and the betting procedures. from wikipedia

Some are very used, others in decent condition. Somehow … the ‘very used’ seem to feel special when you hold them. After all, some very loving, little hands enjoyed them over the years.

We can’t actually sell a still, but …

On a Friday it just seems like a perfect time to show this picture of a pottery jug and a copper still.
In the picture, it’s a 2 gal. jug. But we have many sizes available. So stop by and see if we can find the size you’re looking for!
Interestingly, there are plenty of questions regarding owning an old copper still. Of course, how you use it is the main issue. If you use it to distill water or for decoration, well, you can have one. If you’re going to actually distill alcohol, well, that’s another matter. You’ll have federal, state and local permitting to consider. CLICK HERE for an article from 2015 that will at least make you think long and hard before creating your own ‘moonshine’!
Stop in soon. We’re still allowed to ‘talk about it!”

Harford County 1858 Map

This map was published by Jennings & Herrick entirely from original surveys. It includes an inset of Havre de Grace Streets. (yep, we know it’s upside down. It is so fragile that we didn’t want it to tear,)

Posted above is a better photo from Herrick, L. W. A map of Harford Co., Maryland, 1858. [Philadelphia?, Jennings & Herrick, 1858] Map. Retrieved from the Library of Congress, website. (Accessed July 12, 2017.)
George also has an 1803 map regarding “Harmers Town as established by the concerned parties in the year 1796”
Made from tracings from the original maps in the clerks office at Bel Air, Nov. 1803. Below are some great snapshots of the map

Stop by Bahoukas Antique Mall to view many historic pieces related to Havre de Grace history. Many are not for sale, but George has plenty of stories to make it worth your while. Of course, we have 9,000 sq ft of antiques and collectibles plus another 2,200 sq ft of browsing in the Beer MuZeum (and yes, most of this IS for sale). We’ll be watchin’ for ya!

JUST IN: Unique, hand-crafted Anri stoppers
History of ANRI Wood Carving
It all began in the late 19th century when Alois Riffeser traveled to the major European cities to sell the wood carved figurines and toys which were bought from the farmers of the Gröden Valley located in the Dolomite region of the Alps. This area in South Tyrol was part of Austria-Hungary at the time until being annexed to Italy in 1919.
In 1912 Josef Anton Riffeser founded the ANRI Company, which he named using the first two letters of his first and last name. After World War I, where he was in a prisoner of war camp in Siberia, he formulated his plan for a woodcarving company. He created his own models which he distributed successfully, mainly in the Alpine region. ___read more on their website

The above photo shows only two of the Anri stoppers that we received this week. They are delightful, hand-carved, wooden, mechanical bottle stoppers. A perfect conversation piece to show off at your next gathering.

The stopper on the left answers a phone when you push the lever in the back down. The one on the right lifts a camera to take a picture.
ANRI Wood Carving Artists
Famous artists and modellers from around the world have created unique designs that the skilled workers at ANRI transform into beautifully detailed wood carved figures.

Local Talent Has ALWAYS Been A Community Asset
Having just enjoyed our 2017 Havre de Grace Independence Celebration, it seems like the perfect time to share some volunteer community activities of years past. Check out these programs from entertaining events!

This 1930s brochure is delightful. Lots of local talent… and the layout is very interesting. On each page is an ‘act’ along with advertising. You won’t miss anyone – advertising support, sponsors, or participants in the ‘follies!’ This would be so much fun today!

This 1953 program benefiting the Elks’ Club and their charity programs took place at the Havre de Grace High School auditorium. Another interesting program for a great cause! Here’s the actual program in the booklet:

Look at the participation! We love these examples of community involvement and the great talent available. Stop by to check out these intriguing pamphlets and the many other historical pieces that can be seen at Bahoukas Antique Mall.

Havre de Grace UMC has a long history!

I believe that the church first operated from the preacher’s home. This is the first building where the congregation met. We’re double checking. But I believe the Susquehanna Hose Company firehouse at the corner of Union and Pennington Avenue is where the building stood.
Supposedly, part of the wall was incorporated in the firehouse structure. We’re trying to find out if you can see it.
What a wonderful history. And this booklet tells a very complete story.
You are encouraged to learn more on their website. Better yet, please visit! It’s a beautiful building located at 101 South Union Avenue since 1902!
