Long before the advent of circus clowns, mimes trapped in glass boxes and stand-up comedians, there were harlequins — colorfully costumed tricksters whose role in theater productions and amusements at court was to keep audiences on their toes and fellow players in the dark.

SMURFS have been BIG business! Here’s a quote from Wikipedia:
The Smurfs is a Belgian comic book series created by Peyo in 1958. It became well-known worldwide with the Hanna-Barbera cartoon series in the 1980s. With the popularity of the Smurfs came a wide range of toys and spin-off products and use of the Smurfs in merchandising. Smurfs’ merchandising in 2008 generates about 5 to 12 million euro per year in Europe alone, while the total figure after fifty years worldwide is about $5 billion.
Do you know how many female Smurfs there are? Do you know their names? We’ll give the answer at the end of the post.
Are you familiar with FLIX?

The answer to the Female Smurfs: Smurfette , Sassette, and Nanny. When the movies came out, more were created.
According to Wikipedia, we have the following explanation of a German “Tinnie:”
“Tinnie” is the common term for a commemorative medal made from a non-precious metal such as zinc or tin (or even plastic) and with provisions for being attached to a garment and displayed while worn. Such medals were commonly sold or given away at public events to build group cohesiveness or to lend prestige to the wearer. The “golden age of the tinnie” was World War Two, and the Nazi Party and the USSR were among the most prolific disbursers of them. They are avidly collected today by hobbyists and, although usually inexpensive to obtain, are often collected in conjunction with coins, exonumia, military awards and decorations and other related small stamped or cast metal objects.

Sleuthing out the difference between a toby jug and a character mug is elementary; jugs have a spout on the rim for pouring, while mugs are straight along the entire rim. A typical character mug is molded to represent just the head of a subject. A toby jug is fashioned into the full figure of a plump, jolly man named Toby Fillpot, who was said to have died from overindulging in drink and tobacco. Toby jugs depict their namesake dressed in a long coat and a tricorn hat, which forms the pouring spout. Toby also holds a mug of ale in one hand and a pipe in the other.
In researching a bit more, we learned that the Toby Jugs and Character Mugs are popular with men. Maybe you’ll want to consider adding to your favorite guy’s collection (or help him start one)!
If you’re so inclined (or that serious a collector), you may want to visit the American Toby Jug Museum in Evanston, Illinois.
Stop by Bahoukas Antique Mall and Beer MuZeum soon and see more of this particular ‘collection of collections.’ Yes – we will be watchin’ for ya!
Glass Paper Weights can add a bit of color to a drab day.
We decided that with the crazy weather patterns that in the past week or two have included 50 degree days and sunny, ice-sleet-snow days dropping to single digits, and just about everything in between, we’d add just a splash of color.
Abstract or simple, the paperweight adds a hint of sunshine.
Glass paperweights are just that hint of color, sunshine and spring that you might need. Add one to your desk, kitchen counter, bookshelf, or bedroom nightstand.
These paperweights look almost like they have coral inside of them.
Choose one for its coloring, the flower hidden inside, or the abstract ones that tickle the imagination when you find your gaze fixed on them. But give them an opportunity to inspire thoughts of spring and remind you that it won’t be long!
Glass and pottery ‘frogs’ for the flowers that remind you Spring isn’t far away.
These ‘frogs’ are for used to arrange flowers. Some are complete, just add water and flowers. Others are placed at the bottom of a vase, then add flowers. These frogs allow you to create beautiful arrangements easily.
Why did we mention these ‘frogs’ along with the glass paperweights?
We thought that while you’re thinking about spring, sun, and color, you just might want to pick up some cut flowers and bring all of those beautiful thoughts into your home and/or office. And these ‘frogs’ will just make that task easy.
So enjoy a sweet touch of color and sun by stopping in to Bahoukas Antique Mall and Beer MuZeum and find one or two items that will brighten a corner of your desk, counter, home or office. Don’t forget to grab a bouquet of cut flowers on your way. In the meantime, you guessed it, we’ll be watchin’ for ya!

Tin can containers with advertising have always been popular.

They make perfect storage containers for a very wide variety of items from bags of flours to cookies, yarns to crayons, and just about anything you might think of.
Tin Trays offer everything from advertising, to tourism messages, and symbols of the states.
Tin trays have been used for their primary use – carrying things. But tin trays have also been used for wall decorations or to hold things on shelves and tables. They come in pretty much every shape and size. Many collectors love them for their advertising as well.
Here at Bahoukas we also have a wonderful assortment of decorative, tin signs. Some have old advertisements on them, others are just great images, like the surfboards in the one pictured to the left.

Yes, small is beautiful … and fun! These cars, trucks are more are proof!
Do you remember playing with Hot Wheels and other little cars and trucks as a kid? Do you share that fun with your own kids or grand kids?
At Bahoukas we have a wide variety of small metal and plastic mini-vehicles. From fire trucks to construction equipment, possibly your favorite car of your youth, we have scores to choose from.
These little cars have a long history… TootsieToy made die cast cars in the 50s. They were crude and not very detailed. Then MatchBox hit the market in the mid-50s. And Hot Wheels burst onto the scene in the 60s.
We have a variety of the scale model, mini-vehicles and believe it’s a great way to share your stories of playing with them (and, of course, sharing those favorite ‘car stories’) with the youngsters in your life. It’s also a great way to start the kids collecting. What a wonderful way to enjoy years gone by.
The following quote from an article at Hemmings.com shares the love of these mini-cars in those early years:
Before you could drive, there was the desire to drive. Before you could put your name on a pink slip, you could ask Grandpa for a dollar to buy something cool. The rip of the package, the smell of the fresh paint that escaped the blisterpack, the bounce of the suspension, the fast roll of your new ride. More than a few car junkies will have to admit that playing with (and collecting) Hot Wheels was their first step into loving cars.
Stop in at Bahoukas and see the variety of die-cast cars and more. We’ll be watchin’ for ya!

Thumb Screws are best described in this quote from RabComponents.com:
A screw drive that comes with either a tall headed or ridged (knurled) sides, or a key-like flat sided vertical head can be defined as a thumb screw. These screws can easily be tightened or loosened by hand without using any external drive. However, they are not ideally used for any structural applications.
The over-sized head with the diamond-patterned grip finish allows the screw to be tightened or loosened without any external effort. This easy feature makes the screw an imperative part of those devices that require frequent removal and re-installation; for example, safety covers of electronic devices..
What are the Basic Applications and Advantages?
A thumb screw actually acts like a bolt in most applications. When typically used, this blunt-nosed screw or bolt is fastened into a threaded hole and its ease of removal doesn’t require any external tool to assemble or disassemble any equipment.
Old Cut Nails
The history of the humble nail can reveal a great deal. CLICK HERE to read a wonderful, brief article about the history of the nail.
Looking at antique furniture, we often seek clues for authenticity and age. There are many factors that show true historic construction, but one clue that is often overlooked is the type of nail used to hold the piece together. Nails in antique furniture are often barely noticeable, but they are another key to unlock the history of wooden pieces. The quest for the ideal nail has taken centuries of development. As Churchill noted, “To improve is to change, to be perfect is to change often.”
CLICK HERE for a variety of ways to use old nails in crafts. It includes art, puzzles, and yes, even coasters. Check it out.
