Collect Slot Cars?

Look at this assortment of 1970s AFX Aurora Slot Cars

1960s collectible AFX Aurora Slot Cars at Bahoukas Antique Mall in Havre de Grace

The Aurora Plastics Corporation introduced the A/FX (Aurora Factory Experimentals, later simply “AFX”) line of slot cars, slot car track sets, and related accessories in 1971. The AFX brand continued production until the company was forced into receivership in 1983.[1]Aurora designed the AFX cars with interchangeable car body shells usually compatible with each chassis they released during these years. The original 1971 A/FX chassis utilized an updated version of the existing pancake motor design of Aurora’s “Thunderjet 500” line, popular in the 1960s.[2] Aurora then released a longer version of the A/FX chassis in 1973, known as the “Specialty” chassis, which incorporated a longer wheelbase and gearplate (and often a more powerful armature) with bodies unique to that chassis. The car bodies designed to fit the shorter original chassis featured a clever snap-on design while the bodies for the Specialty chassis were affixed with a small screw. In late 1974, Aurora redesigned both the original and Specialty chassis and exposed the bottom of the motor magnets. The exposed magnets were attracted to the metal rails in the track during racing, creating downforce to help hold the car on the track while cornering. AFX “Magna-Traction” cars remained popular from their release in 1974 throughout 1983, even after faster chassis designs were introduced in house and by Tyco.    from Wikipedia

How popular were slot cars in America?

Here’s a quote from Rob Lammle in his article, Little Engines That Could: A Brief History of Slot Cars, published on MentalFloss.com in 2011:

Then in 1960, the British company Playcraft Model Motoring had a slot car display at a London toy show. Representatives from Aurora, an American company that specialized in scale model kits, snatched up the American marketing rights for Playcraft’s slots. Within five years, Aurora had sold 25 million slot cars to eager kids, becoming the most successful line of slot cars in history.

PACHINKO?

And what IS Pachinko?

Pachinko (パチンコ) is a type of mechanical game originating in Japan and is used as both a form of recreational arcade game and much more frequently as a gambling device, filling a Japanese gambling niche comparable to that of the slot machine in Western gaming.   from Wikipedia

Japanese PACHINKO machine available at Bahoukas in Havre de Grace

Pachinko machines were first built during the 1920s as a children’s toy called the “Corinth game” (コリントゲーム korinto gēmu), based on and named after the American “Corinthian bagatelle”.[4] Another likely inspiration was the Billard japonais, ‘Japanese billiards’, invented in Western Europe during the 18th century. It emerged as an adult pastime in Nagoya around 1930 and spread from there. All of Japan’s pachinko parlors were closed down during World War II but re-emerged in the late 1940s. Pachinko has remained popular since; the first commercial parlor was opened in Nagoya in 1948.    from Wikipedia

Here’s a video explaining how Pachinko is played.

Believe it or not, we have a Pachinko machine at Bahoukas. Of course, you believe it. After all, we have the “Collection of Collections!” Stop by and see it for yourself. Be sure to leave plenty of time to browse our 9,000+ sq ft of “Collections.” Yes, we’ll be watchin’ for ya!

Do you remember Buffalo Bob?

Howdy Doody and other puppets!

Puppets at Bahoukas in Havre de Grace include Howdy Doody, cloth hand puppet with plastic clown face, lady hand puppet, plastic frog hand puppet, and goat and fox push puppets

Howdy Doody was an American children’s television program (with circus and Western frontier themes) that was created and produced by E. Roger Muir and telecast on the NBC network in the United States from December 27, 1947, until September 24, 1960. It was a pioneer in children’s television programming and set the pattern for many similar shows. One of the first television series produced at NBC in Rockefeller Center, in Studio 3A, it was also a pioneer in early color production as NBC (at the time owned by TV maker RCA) used the show in part to sell color television sets in the 1950s.

All Puppets in photos are from my own collection. Push puppets were first made in Switzerland by a wooden toy maker, Walter Kourt Walss in 1932. These articulated, wobbling toys were known as WAKOUWAS; taken from the first few letters of each of Walter’s names! The dancing, wiggling toys are now known by many different names around the world   from Pomsie’s Push Puppets

Cowboys and Tigers and more…oh my

National Day of the Cowboy

John Wayne collectible plates and more at Bahoukas to Celebrate National Day of the Cowboy

Holiday Insights gives us a wonderful definition of National Day of the Cowboy celebrated on the 4th Saturday of July:

National Day of the Cowboy was created in 2005 to preserve the role and contributions cowboys and cowgirls made to the western heritage and history of our country. Every year on this day, the NDOC gives recognition awards to individuals, organizations and projects that contribute to the preservation of both pioneer history, and the promotion of cowboy culture.

Shortly after the Civil War, cowboys and cowgirls began to appear in America’s heartland and the wild west. They were largely ranchers and ranch hands, raising cattle, horses and other animals. Cowboys herded them across the plains to feed the animals, and ultimately to slaughterhouses to feed a growing American population.

It was a wild and often lawless time. In the absence of the rule of law, Cowboys developed their own code to live by, known as the “Cowboy Code of Conduct” or the “Cowboy Code of Ethics”. They were simple and logical rules of behavior. The rules could readily apply at any time, even today.

Consider this wonderful Cowboy Code of Honor:

  • Live each day with honesty and courage.
  • Take pride in your work. Always do your best.
  • Stay curious. Study hard and learn all you can.
  • Do what has to be done and finish what you start.
  • Be tough, but fair.
  • When you make a promise, keep it.
  • Be clean in thought, word, deed, and dress.
  • Practice tolerance and understanding of others.
  • Be willing to stand up for what is right.
  • Be an excellent steward of the land and its animals

Then Celebrate International Tiger Day

Collectible Tiger glasses to celebrate International Tiger Day available at Bahoukas

International Tiger Day celebrates tigers, the largest cat on the planet. It is arguably the most beautiful and majestic cat on the planet, too. Love ’em, hate ’em, or just plain scared of them, one must admit that they are indeed a beautiful animal.

At an International Tiger Summit in Saint Petersburg, Russia, the plight of wild tigers came into full focus.  Over the last century, the world-wild tiger population dropped 97% (not including tigers in zoos). With only an estimated 3,000 tigers left in the wild, they are on the brink of extinction. The drastic population loss was due to several factors, among them was hunting, poaching, and loss of habitat.  This international groups sought raise awareness to the plight of the tiger, and to protect and expand their habitat. Their goals and endeavors, are an international effort.  from Holiday Insights

Vanilla Ice Cream and Old Jokes

Makes a Rainy Day Much Better

Celebrate Vanilla Ice Cream and Oldl Joke Day at Bahoukas Antique Mall in Havre de Grace, MD

We have a variety of Ice Cream scoops and a few unique dishes for enjoying your ice cream. From HolidayHindsights we’ve learned:

National Vanilla Ice Cream Day celebrates one of Americas favorite ice cream flavors.

Vanilla and chocolate ice cream vies for the taste buds ice cream lovers. Chocolate may win the popularity contest. But, vanilla is a close second. It is also more refreshing, and more versatile.

Its easy to celebrate Vanilla Ice Cream Day on a hot summer day like today. Enjoy it in a cone, a dish, a float, a shake, or in a cake. If you get it in a cone today, ask for extra scoops, and worry about the calories later. Just make sure to eat it quickly, before it melts.

We might add that a trip to Bomboy’s Ice Cream on Market Street just might make the day perfect.

To help with celebrating Old Joke Day on Tuesday, July 24, 2018, we share these thoughts from HolidayHindsights:

No doubt about it. Today, will be a fun-filled day, with lots of laughter. To fully participate and enjoy this day, just tell some jokes. You can do it in person, or pass along a few humorous emails. That’s easy enough to do. The more jokes you tell, the more fun this day will be. We also encourage you to listen to many jokes today. Everybody is getting into the act, and in order to tell a joke, someone has to be present to listen to the joke.

To celebrate Tell An Old Joke Day, we have 2 ‘adult jokes’, wonderful MAD Magazines, Jack & Jill Magazines (that always had fun jokes), and an 8mm film “Have Badge, Will Chase” with Abbott &* Costello!

… on Tell an Old Joke Day, you should tell old jokes. The logic behind this, is to keep old jokes from fading away. If they were once funny, they will still produce a laugh. On National Tell a Joke Day on August 16th, you can tell a new joke, or an old one.

So come on by and pick up an ice cream scoop, a pretty dish to enjoy your ice cream, and grab a magazine for a joke or two!  Hey, maybe you have an old joke you want to share with us. We’ll be watchin’ for ya!

How Are The Moon, Ratcatchers, and Parents Connected?

We’ll Start with Moon Day – July 20!

On July 16, 1969, Apollo 11 was launched from Cape Kennedy Space Center atop a huge Saturn V rocket. On July 20, 1969, the Lunar Module, nicknamed the “Eagle”, touched down on the surface of the moon at Tranquility Base. Upon landing, Apollo 11 Commander Neil Armstrong reported “The Eagle Has Landed”. A few hours later, Neil Armstrong, stepped off of the Eagle’s ladder, placed one foot upon the moon’s surface and proclaimed: “That’s one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind”.  from Holiday Insights

There are always celebrations at Bahoukas including Moon Day, Ratcatchers Day and Parents Day - visit us in Havre de Grace

We offer a few items like a Life Magazine, A Little Golden Book, Exploring SpaceHot Wheels Armageddon toys, and more.

Then we just couldn’t resist a celebration titled “Ratcatchers Day” on July 22 – what possibly could that be?

One of the most well known German folklores is the story of the Pied Piper of Hamelin. The town of Hamelin, Germany was infested by rats. The mayor promised to handsomely pay the Pied Piper, if he rid the town of rats.   from Holiday Insights

This is an interesting interpretation of “Ratcatchers Day” and you just might want to click on this link above and read the rest. In the meantime, we found a rat (well, mouse) trap and have Ratatouie Pez! ENJOY!

And then PARENTS DAY!

We have lots of things for Parents Day but were tickled by these “Maw and Paw” saucers.

Today is not a day of gift giving. That’s for Mother’s Day and Father’s Day. The best way to mark this day is by spending time with your parents doing something fun. Its also important that you let them how how much they are loved and appreciated.

Show Mom and Dad you love ’em. Stop by Bahoukas Antique Mall and walk down “Nostalgia Lane” with them. Listen to their stories and give them a hug.

In 1994, President William (Bill) Clinton proclaimed the fourth Sunday in July as National Parents Day.

Quotes are from Holiday Insights. Of course, we’ll be watchin’ for ya! Remember, everything is 20% off during our CHRISTMAS in JULY SALE!

Forget Friday the 13th …

We’re going for National French Fry Day!

Celebrate National French Day with this McDonald's House at Bahoukas Antiques

The above is a 1982 Mattel and Barbie McDonald’s play set.

… It’s name might suggest a French origin. But, French Fries are believed to have originated in Belgium in the 17th century.  Fried potatoes were substituted in the Belgium diet in winter months, when fish were not available to fry. From Europe, their popularity spread literally around the world.

French fries were introduced to the U.S. by President Thomas Jefferson. In the U.S., french fries are the most popular fast food item.

Did You Know? Americans consume 30 pounds of potatoes per person per year. 25% of those potatoes are made into french fries.

from Holiday Insights

Then Saturday is National Nude Day

… well, we have a few blushingly appropriate items … stop in and see them.

National Nude Day is a serious and special day. There are a sizable number of nudist groups around the world. They are not perverts. Rather, Nudists believe that the body is a beautiful thing, and meant to be displayed. Nudist colonies, nude beaches, and other venues exist to cater to the preferences of individuals who seek to walk around “au natural”. Even the conservative city of Buffalo, NY gets in on the act, holding an annual nude bike ride, encouraging participants to wear as little as they want.   from Holiday Insights

National Nude Day is July 14 - we have a few items at Bahoukas!

and Finally, Be a Dork Day

Today (July 15) is Be a Dork Day.  If you are a dork, stand up, be counted, and be proud. If you are not currently a dork, it’s your chance to be one, if only for a day. We are not sure why you would choose to be a dork today or any day. But, if you are so inclined, go for it and certainly enjoy this day along with all it has to offer.

Not sure you want to be a dork? The adjectives used to describe a dork include: awkward, clumsy, goofy, odd, out of touch, ridiculous, silly, and social misfit. I’m sure we missed a few attributes, but you get the picture.

What a Dork is not: A dork is not a nerd or a geek. Nerds and geeks have a higher IQ, and while quirky, they are held to a higher level of esteem.

from Holiday Insights

So have fun this weekend. Forget worrying about Friday the 13th. Celebrate it with some French Fries. Then at least smile about July 14 National Nude Day. And hug a Dork on Sunday, July 15!

Remember that tomorrow evening, July 14, from 9-11pm is our Paranormal Investigation. Call ASAP to reserve your space. And stop in soon, we’re celebrating “Christmas in July” with a 20% off EVERYTHING. We’ll be watchin’ for ya!

Kisses, Cherry Pits, and Video Games

Just what might these have in common?

Kissing figurines, cherry pitter, and video games - make for some fun treasures at Bahoukas Antiques

Well, they may not have much in common. But they are a great example of the variety of treasures you might find at Bahoukas Antique Mall. According to holidayinsights.com, International Kissing Day is today, July 6th. Kisses can be anything from a peck on the check to those long, toe-tingling lovers’ smooches. If you just want to celebrate with a little gift, check out these cute little oriental figurines ‘smooching.’ Don’t they just make you smile? Oh, come on, just a little bit!

Tomorrow, July 7, is Cherry Pit Spitting Day. Who knew! Here’s the history from: Holiday Insights

Date When Celebrated : First Saturday of July

In 1974, Herb Teichman of Eau Claire, MI.held a cherry pit spitting tournament as a joke, at a picnic. It was a real hit, and has been held annually since that very first tournament in 1974. Little did Teichman know at the time, that this would become an annual event, and spark the creation of International Cherry Pit Spitting Day .

The timing for this holiday on the first Saturday in July is perfect, as the cherries are ripe. As we hold Fourth of July and summer picnics, fresh cherries are available in abundance.

Are you looking to break the record? Well, you’d better start practicing. The world record  for cherry pit spitting is 100′ 4″ !!

Celebrate this special day by holding or participating in a cherry pit spitting contest.

About the date: Herb Teichman, the originator to the Cherry Pit Spitting contest, set the first Saturday in July for this annual event. There are some references to this day always being on July 7th. This is erroneous. It is not a fixed date.

This amazing cast iron cherry ‘pitter’ is waiting for the champion ‘spitter’ to use to create his/her arsenal. (Now isn’t that a tongue-twister!) Have fun!

Then on Sunday, July 8, we have Video Games Day!

Video Games Day – always on July 8th

National Video Games Day – always on September 12th

Video Games Day celebrates popular video games that stormed onto the market, and changed the way your kids play games. From Atari to Nintendo to Xbox, video games provide all too many hours of playing time on your television set.

In grandma and grandpa’s day, they had stick horses for toys and playtime. Todays kids (big kids and little kids) have an enormous array of video games to play. Before you get tired of one game, another one hits the market.

Our extensive research into this special day discovered two separately distinct dates. Also, both dates for this special day refer to it as Video Games Day and National Video Games Day. Based upon our research results, we give the edge to September 12th as National Video Games Day. Lucky gamer that you are, you get to celebrate two video games days.

Celebrate  National Video Games Day by playing video games. If you are off from school (or if you are a big kid off from work), make this a marathon day for video games. Better still, invite a few friends and hold a competition. Just make certain that you have enough controllers.    … Holiday Insights

Marilyn Monroe Still Intrigues Us

Marilyn wasn’t really a dumb blonde!

I believe that everything happens for a reason. People change so that you can learn to let go, things go wrong so that you appreciate them when they’re right, you believe lies so you eventually learn to trust no one but yourself, and sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.  __Marilyn Monroe

Marilyn Monroe collector plates

She was the victim of ballyhoo and sensation — exploited beyond anyone’s means. __Sir Laurence Olivier

Monroe did not own a house until the last year of her life, and had surprisingly few possessions. One that she prized was an autographed photo of Albert Einstein, which included an inscription: “To Marilyn, with respect and love and thanks.”
