Forget Friday the 13th …

We’re going for National French Fry Day!

Celebrate National French Day with this McDonald's House at Bahoukas Antiques

The above is a 1982 Mattel and Barbie McDonald’s play set.

… It’s name might suggest a French origin. But, French Fries are believed to have originated in Belgium in the 17th century.  Fried potatoes were substituted in the Belgium diet in winter months, when fish were not available to fry. From Europe, their popularity spread literally around the world.

French fries were introduced to the U.S. by President Thomas Jefferson. In the U.S., french fries are the most popular fast food item.

Did You Know? Americans consume 30 pounds of potatoes per person per year. 25% of those potatoes are made into french fries.

Then Saturday is National Nude Day

… well, we have a few blushingly appropriate items … stop in and see them.

National Nude Day is a serious and special day. There are a sizable number of nudist groups around the world. They are not perverts. Rather, Nudists believe that the body is a beautiful thing, and meant to be displayed. Nudist colonies, nude beaches, and other venues exist to cater to the preferences of individuals who seek to walk around “au natural”. Even the conservative city of Buffalo, NY gets in on the act, holding an annual nude bike ride, encouraging participants to wear as little as they want.   from Holiday Insights

National Nude Day is July 14 - we have a few items at Bahoukas!

and Finally, Be a Dork Day

Today (July 15) is Be a Dork Day.  If you are a dork, stand up, be counted, and be proud. If you are not currently a dork, it’s your chance to be one, if only for a day. We are not sure why you would choose to be a dork today or any day. But, if you are so inclined, go for it and certainly enjoy this day along with all it has to offer.

Not sure you want to be a dork? The adjectives used to describe a dork include: awkward, clumsy, goofy, odd, out of touch, ridiculous, silly, and social misfit. I’m sure we missed a few attributes, but you get the picture.

What a Dork is not: A dork is not a nerd or a geek. Nerds and geeks have a higher IQ, and while quirky, they are held to a higher level of esteem.

So have fun this weekend. Forget worrying about Friday the 13th. Celebrate it with some French Fries. Then at least smile about July 14 National Nude Day. And hug a Dork on Sunday, July 15!

a huge Spanish galleon and a couple sailboat models - at Bahoukas in Havre de Grace

We’ve shown this beautiful Spanish Galleon sailing vessel before, but it’s still waiting for the perfect home. It’s an absolutely stunning model. The little red sailboat in the foreground is ‘not for sale’ since we have a young boy ghost who plays among the shelves and gets mighty upset when we move his boat. The other sailboat in the background is for sale. Stop into Bahoukas and see these models. We’re sure they’re perfect for someone! We’ll be watchin’ for ya!

Our friendly young ghost loves this boat at Bahoukas Antiques in Havre de Grace

We’ve shared this story before, but with the Paranormal Investigators returning this Saturday, May 20, 2017, we thought we’d share it again. This entity has been residing in our store for a long time. He’s mischievous and fun, but gets quite upset when we move this boat. Listen to George’s story:

Yes it’s ghostly Friday… but can we talk about Green Stamps!

Green Stamps redeemed for great purchases were a thriving business for decades! Visit Bahoukas in Havre de Grace.

Do you remember waiting for the opportunity to gather all the stamps your mom or grandmom collected
so that you could lick ’em and stick ’em in the books!

It was exciting to see how many pages or books you could fill. Oftentimes, it meant that something you really, really wanted might be possible through the S&H Green Stamps Catalog.

Paste your stamps in the S&H Green Stamps booklet - Bahoukas in Havre de Grace

But do you know they first arrived on the American retail scene in 1896!!! That’s true! Their heyday was throughout the 1960s-70s. S&H Green Stamps were so popular that they were mentioned in songs, movies and tv shows. The Beatles and Pat Boone are just two of the number who mention them in song or movie. As late as 2001 they were mentioned in the moving, Riding in Cars with Boys.

During the 1970s and 1980s, the term “green stamps” was commonly used by truckers and other motorists on Citizens’ Band (CB) radios to refer to money; for instance, a radio operator advising fellow operators that “Ol’ Smokie just got some of my green stamps” was understood to be saying a highway patrolman had just stopped him and given him a traffic ticket. This usage still occurs in the CB radio community.[9]                                             _________from Wikipedia

Even truckers used the term to replace the word ‘money’ in their chatter. Most surprisingly, you can still redeem those old S&H Green Stamps for S&H GreenPoints and get a gift certificate. Really – it’s true! Just click on the image below to go to the website.

S&H Greenpoints will redeem your old S&H Green Stamps. Bahoukas in Havre de Grace has examples to show you!

Now that’s what I call longevity in the world of ‘loyalty programs.’ To learn plenty more details go to WIKIPEDIA! Some great trivia here. ENJOY!

Since I didn’t give you a Ghost Story… you’ll definitely want to check this out!

Schedule for May 20, June 3 and July 15, 2017 paranormal investigators at Bahoukas

That’s right. Our Dead of Night Paranormal Investigators will return

Casper the Ghost Was Friendly – Right?

Bahoukas Antiques Has Some Playful Ghosts…

Casper the Ghost Doll at Bahoukas Antiques in Havre de Grace

We know Casper was friendly (and yes, our little doll is for sale). But who knew that one of the dolls that has since been sold just loved to play tricks on Betty.

Listen to Betty’s short tale of a doll that just couldn’t keep his safety-pinned pants on.

What do you think?

(It makes me wonder what happened when the person who bought the doll took it home!)

Who is Mary – lady in the chair?

It’s Ghost Friday again.

ghost in the chair supposedly is Mary - at Bahoukas in Havre de Grace

George’s first story of ghosts in the store was from a visiting couple. It seems he was a paranormal and sensed a woman whom he said enjoyed the shop and was sitting in a particular chair.

Here’s George to tell us about “Mary.” Do you know who she might be?

NOTE: the photo is NOT the lady (sorry)

NOTE 2: The chair has since been sold. We’re  not sure Mary stayed, but we’ve had no bad energies even though we sold her chair.

Have you noticed the little boy ghost who has a favorite sailboat?

George shares the story of the little boy ghost and his favorite sailboat at Bahoukas in Havre de Grace MD

George shares a brief story of the little boy who got really upset when George moved the sailboat behind the counter. George was trying to keep it so it wouldn’t be sold, but the little boy was not entirely pleased. Listen to the audio:

Do you want to join the “Dead of Night” Paranormal Investigators and experience the not-so-visible folks who share the store at Bahoukas? A great evening is being scheduled. Don’t miss this event. If we’re lucky, we’ll have so many folks, we’ll need to schedule another night or two. These investigators have been here before and we had a great evening. Are you up to it? Ready to see, hear, or feel the quiet (or maybe not so quiet) inhabitants that hang around the shop? Here are the details. Call George ASAP to be included or to find out if he’ll have another date available.
