Hula Hoops are a great way to have your children burn off that crazy, pent-up energy from the rainy days! We have them. The hula hoop gained international popularity in the late 1950s, when a plastic version was successfully marketed by California’s Wham-O toy company. In 1957, Richard Knerr and Arthur “Spud” Melin, starting with the idea of Australian bamboo “exercise hoops”, manufactured 1.06-metre (42 in) hoops with Marlex plastic. With giveaways and national marketing and retailing, a fad was started in July 1958; twenty-five million plastic hoops were sold in less than four months, and in two years, sales reached more than 100 million units. Carlon Products Corporation was one of the first manufacturers of the hula hoop. During the 1950s, when the hula hoop craze swept the country, Carlon was producing more than 50,000 hula hoops per day. The hoop was inducted into the National Toy Hall of Fame at The Strong in Rochester, New York, in 1999.
The hula hoop craze swept the world, dying out again in the 1980s, but not in China and Russia, where hula hooping and hoop manipulation were adopted by traditional circuses and rhythmic gymnasts.

The Merry Monarch’s first race of 1846 was the Derby at Epsom. The build-up to the race was marred by reports of a plot to either lame or poison Old England, one of the favourites for the race, while another one of the leading contenders, The Libel, was allegedly drugged (“doctored”). Poor weather on the morning of the race did not deter the crowd, which was reported to be as large and unruly as ever. Ridden by the little-known Foster Bell, The Merry Monarch started at odds of 15/1 in a record field of thirty one runners. These official odds however, were offered jointly for The Merry Monarch and his stable companion Doleful: according to The Sporting Magazine, odds of 35/1 would have been more accurate reflection of the actual betting. The start of the race was delayed by almost an hour by a series of false starts and an incident in which one of the leading contenders, Alarm was kicked by The Libel. Alarm threw off his jockey, Nat Flatman, ran into a chain fence and then galloped loose down the course for several minutes before being caught. Both Alarm and Flatman were injured, but took part in the race when it eventually got under way. The Merry Monarch was among the leading group from the start, and was in fourth place at the turn into the straight, where one horse fell and several others were badly hampered. Approaching the final furlong, Bell sent The Merry Monarch to the front and he established a clear lead before staying on well to win “in clever style” by a length from Annandale, with Old England a neck away in third. The result was a major surprise to most observers, including, it was reported, the winner’s own connections, who had believed that their other runner, Doleful, had the better chance of winning.

These beautiful pieces of Metlox Poppytrail include a butter dish, pitcher, creamer, sugar, and 2 different sizes of serving platters.
… the company expanded into dinnerware and began in 1932 to produce the “200 Series” line of dinnerware. This line was also called “Poppytrail.” The company garnered a great deal of positive response due to offering this dinnerware line. __replacements.com
The first line of pottery produced, “Poppytrail,” became well known for its brightly colored glazes derived from locally mined metallic oxides. Subsequent lines included “Nostalgia,” “Red Rooster,” “California Provincial,” “Colonial Homestead,” “Homestead Provincial,” and “Colorstax.”
In the 1950s Metlox introduced a line of modernist dinnerware featuring free form designs and squared plates using “blanks” that were then decorated with designs and colors. These were then marketed under the pattern names of “California Contempra”, “California Modern” and “California Freeform” names.
The company operated from 1927 until 1989.

A campaign button is a pin used during an election as political advertising for (or against) a candidate or political party, or to proclaim the issues that are part of the political platform. Political buttons date as far back as President George Washington. They have taken many forms as the technology to create an image and mass production has allowed. In the late 18th and first half of the 19th century they were sewn-on clothing buttons, whereas the modern forms typically have pins on the back and are therefore also called pin-back buttons. ___Wikipedia

The first photographic image on pins dates to 1860. Abraham Lincoln and his various opponents used the tintype or ferrotype photo process.
The first mass production of metal buttons dates to the 1896 William McKinley campaign for president with “celluloid” buttons with one side of a metal disk covered with paper (printed with the message) and protected by a layer of clear plastic.
Since 1916, buttons have also been produced by lithographing the image directly onto the metal disk. A celluloid-type button is fastened to a garment using a pin on the back side of the button (in recently produced buttons, the pin generally fits into a safety-pin-style catch). A lithographed button may fasten with a pinback or with a metal tab which folds over a lapel or pocket. ___Wikipedia

The 1952 Republican National Convention was held at the International Amphitheatre in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois from July 7 to July 11, 1952, and nominated the popular general and war hero Dwight D. Eisenhower of Kansas, nicknamed “Ike,” for president and the anti-communist crusading Senator from California, Richard M. Nixon, for vice president.
The Republican platform pledged to end the unpopular war in Korea, supported the development of nuclear weapons as a deterrence strategy, to fire all “the loafers, incompetents and unnecessary employees” at the State Department, condemned the Roosevelt and Truman administrations’ economic policies, supported retention of the Taft-Hartley Act, opposed “discrimination against race, religion or national origin”, supported “Federal action toward the elimination of lynching”, and pledged to bring an end to communist subversion in the United States.
The 1952 convention was the first to be televised nationwide!
We’ve shown this beautiful Spanish Galleon sailing vessel before, but it’s still waiting for the perfect home. It’s an absolutely stunning model. The little red sailboat in the foreground is ‘not for sale’ since we have a young boy ghost who plays among the shelves and gets mighty upset when we move his boat.
