KNIVES May Not Seem Appropriate

But a knife is a tool first and foremost. A pocket knife quite often will have more than one blade that will allow you to loosen/tighten a screw, or even open an envelope. Others can be used to whittle wood to create a toy or small sculpture, open a package, remove a splinter, and still others are used by hunters.

CLICK HERE for a great blog post that tells you how best to clean a spaghetti ceramic figure. It can really change an old piece to a real collectible.

Vintage spaghetti poodle dogs have so much charm and character. They come in a variety of colors and styles and can be found highly decorated with rhinestones, bows, glasses, hats, playing sports, chain leash with puppies, depicted as fireman, graduating students, band musicians, reading the daily newspaper, snooty, high fashion, smoking, brides and more!

Spaghetti Poodles were made from clay, porcelain, and ceramic; their “hair” was applied in various ways to form various textures to mimic an actual poodle’s hairdo. To accomplish the spaghetti look, decorators and designers would have different techniques like using tea strainers to push the material through it to form strands that were then affixed to the poodle giving it a pom-pom look or swirled onto to the poodle for a curly look. Spaghetti is very fragile and tends to break or chip during the years.    (this is discussing Spaghetti Poodles, but there are many ceramic items that use the ‘spaghetti’ technique) from Crazy4Me.com blog)

Boardgames – from Senet to Monopoly to Chess

Have you ever heard of Senet?

Senet (or Senat) is a board game from Predynastic and ancient Egypt. The oldest hieroglyph representing a Senet game dates to around 3100 BC.  The full name of the game inEgyptian was zn.t n.t ḥˁb meaning the “game of passing”.

from OriginalPeople.org

Well, we don’t have a game of Senet in our shop … but we do have quite a variety of games. The following shows only a few of the many available: Beverly Hillbillies card game, Cootie, Password, original Master Mind, Backgammon, The Standard RADIO Game, and Cribbage. But these is merely a small sampling of the many games we have available for all ages!

Just a few of the many board games available at Bahoukas in Havre de Grace including: Beverly Hill Billies card game, Cootie, and Password; as well as Master Mind, Backgammon, Radio and Cribbage!

We have a number of chess sets and many games for younger kids.

Ever wonder who invented board games? Here’s a great article:

People were playing board games earlier than we have any records. Probably the first board games were scratched into dirt. People played with stones or fruit pits for pieces. … About 400 BC people in China began to play a form of chess, and gradually people in India and Central Asia learned to play chess. Greater interest in board games led to the Indian invention of Parcheesi around 300 AD, and a version of Chutes and Ladders about 1200 AD.       from quatr.com

Is your family no longer playing board games? Is everyone on their phones, iPads or glued to a computer game? Do you want to get back to some real family time again!

Consider this quote from an article on Scholastic.com:

Games don’t need to be overtly academic to be educational, however. Just by virtue of playing them, board games can teach important social skills, such as communicating verbally, sharing, waiting, taking turns, and enjoying interaction with others. Board games can foster the ability to focus, and lengthen your child’s attention span by encouraging the completion of an exciting, enjoyable game. Even simple board games like Chutes and Ladders offer meta-messages and life skills: Your luck can change in an instant — for the better or for the worse. The message inherent in board games is: Never give up. Just when you feel despondent, you might hit the jackpot and ascend up high, if you stay in the game for just a few more moves.

Stop into Bahoukas in Havre de Grace, Maryland, soon. Pick out a game or two. Wrap ’em up and place them under the tree. Then when Christmas Day and Dinner begin to move into slow gear, bring out a game or two and enjoy your family and friends.

DAY 20 – Gift Giving Ideas from Bahoukas

BUCKLES – amazing belt buckles

We doubt you’ve considered Bahoukas Antique Mall as a place to find a unique belt buckle for a gift. But think again!

belt buckle is a buckle, a clasp for fastening two ends, such as of straps or a belt, in which a device attached to one of the ends is fitted or coupled to the other. The word enters Middle English via Old French and the Latinbuccula or “cheek-strap,” as for a helmet. Belt buckles and other fixtures are used on a variety of belts, including cingula, baltea, baldrics and later waist-belts. from Wikipedia

Belt Buckles that include Southern Comfort, an Eagle, LAPD Police Dept, PlayBoy Bunny, Native American, Tall Ship, and a Wrecker Tow Truck plus a Batman Kid's Belt.

According to Wikipedia, belt buckles go back at least to the Iron Age, considered by many to fall between 1200 BC to 600 BC. Of course, our belt buckles aren’t quite that old!

Among our unique belt buckles consider the above: a buckle from Southern Comfort, a Police Dept Buckle that says Dieu ET Mon Droit (God and my right), a beautiful Eagle by Great American Buckle Co. 1988, LAPD police belt buckle, the infamous (or notorious) Playboy Bunny buckle, a handsome painted buckle of a wrecker/toy truck, a buckle with a Native American on it, and a Tall Ship belt buckle.

At the top of the photo is part of a Batman Kid’s belt – never work! (no buckle on this belt)

Gifts for a Particular Year

Gift giving never has to be a challenge… instead think of it as a creative endeavor. Would a special person on your list appreciate a gift that shares some interesting history about the birth year, or the year you met, or another significant time in their lives? For instance an old magazine from their birthdate or birth year will most certainly create conversation as folks share stories that they remember.

Bianca Isofache

Here, at Bahoukas Antique Mall, we have a number of old magazines that just might ‘fill the bill’ for that year you’re looking for. Or maybe it’s a childhood book that you find among our shelves that would be a real hit for a gift!

Another unique item can be music from a given year. This, too, can bring a flurry of conversation… and quite often, dancing! And yes, we have record players if you need one!

Mr Cup / Fabien Barral

Looking for a collectible plate with a certain year,

… or a toy from a particular era, or maybe a toy related to a tv show of years gone by are a few more ways a collectible can make a perfect gift. We highly recommend that if you give a collectible item to a younger person, encourage them to find the tv show, commercial, or other piece of info about the item by searching on the internet. That bridges the generations and also brings a collectible to life!

We have old board games,

…license plates, sports items including collectible cards, models and hot wheel cars, Angels of the Year figures, Barbie Dolls, and even World’s Fair memorabilia. So come on, put you’re thinking cap on and start remembering those ‘good ole days’ … because you just might find a gift that will not just be a box to unwrap, but will become the ‘life of the party’ as you all share memories – we consider this the perfect gift.

Visit our blog posts for 44 Days of Gift Giving if you need more ideas to tickle your imagination.

Baltimore Colts Leave in the Middle of the Night

Were you a Colts fan? If so, you might enjoy these tidbits from Wikipedia:

The Baltimore Colts were one of the first NFL teams to have cheerleaders, a marching band and a team “fight song” (along with the nearby Washington Redskins, forty miles southwest in the nation’s capital).

The Baltimore Colts were named after Baltimore’s 142-year-old annual “Preakness Stakes”, a premier thoroughbred horse racing event, second jewel of the famous “Triple Crown” championship series of the sport run at the historic Pimlico Race Course since 1873.

Fisher-Price is a Favorite with Families

founders of Fisher-Price Toys  founders of Fisher-Price Toys

I’ll bet there’s not a person out there, of any generation, that doesn’t recall a Fisher-Price toy in their lives. But did you know how the company got started? Here’s a quote from the Fisher-Price website:

Once upon a time (back in 1930), Herm Fisher thought the world needed better toys. Toys that “appeal to the imagination, that do something new and surprising and funny.”

So he joined forces with Irving Price and Helen Schelle (who didn’t get her name in the logo. Sorry, Helen). Their first line of toys was called “16 hopefuls,” and included a couple of darling ducks.

Since then, Fisher-Price has kept the original vision of those founders in mind. Along the way, we introduced what’s now known as baby gear – all the stuff that makes baby showers worth having, and adds comfort, security, and convenience to the lives of new parents and babies.

We also remember what started it all—what would make Fisher, Price, and Schelle smile. So our goal is to keep enriching the lives of young families. To help parents soothe newborns to sleep. To encourage babies to make that next “I did it!” move. To see the wonder as toddlers discover the magic of play. To hear a preschooler imagine new worlds and explore everyday ones.

To keep bringing joy to generations.

Here at Bahoukas Antique Mall we have a wonderful collection of Fisher-Price Toys that just might delight another youngster for the holidays – or add to someone’s collection. Do any of these bring back memories?

Variety of collectible Fisher-Price Toys available at Bahoukas Antique Mall in Havre de Grace, MD

Among the items above are the Busy Bee, Tractor & Wagon, Assorted Little People, milk crate & bottles, a Party Boat, Cassette Player, and even a Daredevil Skydiver, plus a snowmobile with Little People, and the Clown Jalopy.

The Little People were first introduced in 1950. Here’s a great post that shares their history. Do you remember any of these characters?

Black Friday and Elvis!

ELVIS memorabilia available at Bahoukas Antiques in Havre de Grace

Rolling Stone magazine shared the following:

Elvis Presley was rock & roll’s first real star, not to mention one of the most important cultural forces in history, a hip-shaking symbol of liberation for the staid America of the 1950s. A white Southerner singing blues laced with country, and country laced with gospel, he brought together American music from both sides of the color line and performed it with a natural sexuality that made him a teen idol and role model for generations of cool rebels. He was repeatedly dismissed as vulgar, incompetent, and a bad influence, but the force of his music and his image was no mere merchandising feat. Presley signaled to mainstream culture that it was time to let go. Four decades after his death, Presley’s image and influence remain undiminished. While certainly other artists preceded him to the alter of rock & roll, he is indisputably The King.

Variety of ELVIS memorabilia

We have an entire section dedicated to ELVIS – THE KING including music wind-ups, Gold Records, Whiskey Decanters, telephone, collector plates & tins, AM Radio, dolls, figurines, stamps, puzzles, and shot glasses. If you loved ELVIS, or know someone who does, we can definitely help you find the perfect gift for your or their collection! Take a Break for Thanksgiving

Happy Thanksgiving 2017

On this special day of the year, Americans celebrate:

In 1621, the Plymouth colonists and Wampanoag Indians shared an autumn harvest feast that is acknowledged today as one of the first Thanksgivingcelebrations in the colonies. For more than two centuries, days of thanksgiving were celebrated by individual colonies and states. It wasn’t until 1863, in the midst of the Civil War, that President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national Thanksgiving Day to be held each November.  from History.com

Here, at Bahoukas Antique Mall and Beer MuZeum, we want to first wish each and every one of you a heartfelt Happy Thanksgiving. We also want to remind you to take a moment to truly be thankful for all that you have… love, family, friends, food and shelter. At the same time, take a moment to reach out to another who may not be as fortunate.

Most of all, take time to breathe: breathe in the wonderful aromas of the season, breathe and smile for those you share it with, breathe and let go of all that feels like a burden, breathe… relax … give thanks.
