Have You Enjoyed a Tea Party?

Try a Tea Party for Something Different

Afternoon tea is usually associated with the great tv series we’ve enjoyed, such as Bridgerton and Downton Abbey

… or fun!

But also, you can have fun just as Alice did at the Madhatter’s Tea Party.

Tea Party Etiquette

Of course, you can be very traditional or casual. But a little extra decorum can make a tea party a special event while still being plenty of fun. You might experiment with different tea flavors. Or you could ask each to bring a small dessert to share.

But THIS ARTICLE from PlumDeluxe can add a bit of sparkle to your party.

If you have a matching tea set, a traditional tea party is definitely a good excuse to pull it out and show it off. If not, mismatching cups bring fun and color to your table.

The whole point of a tea party is to get together and enjoy tea. Pick your favorite teas to pour and share with your friends.

So choose your theme. Then stop by Bahoukas if you need to add a few teacups and saucers, serving trays, or a teapot. Make it fun. Mix and match. Invite friends that will enjoy the tea and share stories and laughter. A tea party just might be what you need.

Small Collectibles – part 1

KwikSharp Razor Hone

This KwikSharp Razor Blade Hone is 1940s vintage in original wrapping. Basically, it’s a piece of glass that you used to sharpen a razor blade. During the war and following, razor blades were rationed and often hard to come by. This hone could extend the life of your blades by up to 50 shaves.

Small Collectibles Can Be Quite Artistic

As these cigarette papers show, small collectibles can also be quite artistic. Here’s a great way to capture history in smaller items, while still creating a beautiful collection. Stop by and see what we have to start your own small collection.

Cigarette Papers

THE DAWN OF CIGARETTE PAPER

… burning newspaper had its own problems, especially with the then toxic-based inks. Spanish merchants began offering plain, unprinted paper for this purpose. One small factory in Alcoy that was making specialized packing papers offered the first paper designed specifically for cigarette rolling. This paper was later improved and an additional factory in Alcoy opened to compete. Over time additional cigarette paper factories opened near Barcelona, France, the UK and eventually there were many factories across Europe. In the Alcoy region, there is still one rolling paper factory left, which can actually connect its roots back to the first rolling paper factories. This Alcoy factory produces many popular artisan papers to date. Brands such as RAW, Elements, Juicy Jay’s & DLX are made using processes that date back to the origin of this factory. Some of the craftsmen at this factory have been making papers for generations!

BOOKLET

The origins of the cigarette rolling paper booklet can be traced back to a priest, Father Jaime Villanueva Estingo (Jativa, Spain, Alcoy Region 1765). Before Father Villanueva’s invention, tobacco smokers laboriously and wastefully cut sections of large sheets of paper to roll their cigarettes. He devised a more convenient method of peeling small sheets from pocket-size booklet dispensers and brought his idea to Alcoy, where the first rolling paper booklets ever were produced. People still pay homage to Father Villanueva in Alcoy to this very day.

Calipers – Micrometers – Tools … oh my

Bahoukas received a beautiful collection of calipers and micrometers recently to add to some we already had. It’s a wonderful collection.

Don’t know what they are?

Calipers

Calipers were used as early as the 6th century BC by the Greeks and Romans, according to Wikipedia.

Calipers (photo courtesy of Pixabay)

caliper (British spelling also calliper, or in plurale tantum sense a pair of calipers) is a device used to measure the dimensions of an object.

Many types of calipers permit reading out a measurement on a ruled scale, a dial, or a digital display. Some calipers can be as simple as a compass with inward or outward-facing points, but no scale. The tips of the caliper are adjusted to fit across the points to be measured and the dimension read by measuring between the tips with another measuring tool, such as a ruler.

It is used in many fields such as mechanical engineer-ing, metalworking, forestry, woodworking, science and medicine.

from Wikipedia

Micrometers

Micrometer (courtesy of Pixabay)

The first ever micrometric screw was invented by William Gascoigne in the 17th century, as an enhancement of the vernier; it was used in a telescope to measure angular distances between stars and the relative sizes of celestial objects.

from Wikipedia

micrometer, sometimes known as a micrometer screw gauge, is a device incorporating a calibrated screw widely used for accurate measurement of components in mechanical engineering and machining as well as most mechanical trades, along with other metrological instruments such as dial, vernier, and digital calipers. Micrometers are usually, but not always, in the form of calipers (opposing ends joined by a frame). The spindle is a very accurately machined screw and the object to be measured is placed between the spindle and the anvil. The spindle is moved by turning the ratchet knob or thimble until the object to be measured is lightly touched by both the spindle and the anvil.

Micrometers are also used in telescopes or microscopes to measure the apparent diameter of celestial bodies or microscopic objects. The micrometer used with a telescope was invented about 1638 by William Gascoigne, an English astronomer.

from Wikipedia

Here’s a detailed video with information for both inside and outside calipers and micrometers. Most likely, more than you ever wanted to know unless you’re a user of these great instruments. But a perfect primer for appreciating these amazing instruments.

Now that you know all you ever wanted to know about calipers and micrometers, stop in and visit to view our collection. Rain or shine, yep, we’re watchin’ for ya!

What Toy Monkey is a Celebrity?

The Musical Jolly Chimp played a role as a security guard in Toy Story 3. We received one in excellent shape just this week. Ours is from the 70s and uses batteries. It works! Check out more details on the colorful, celebrity life of the Musical Jolly Chimp!

https://youtu.be/Ow8FuMvNT-E
We have a wonderful Musical Jolly Chimp – just like the crazy one in Toy Story 3

Did You Know?

This crazy monkey toy has been included in movies, books, and songs. Can you guess all of them before you read the following quote?

The cymbal banging monkey toy has appeared in the opening scene of Rebel Without a Cause in 1955, the 1977 Steven Spielberg film Close Encounters of the Third Kind, the 1988 horror film Monkey Shines, the 1996 film Merlin’s Shop of Mystical Wonders, the 2000 film How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000 film), the 2004 film Eurotrip, the 2007 film The Simpsons Movie, the 2010 Disney/Pixar animated film Toy Story 3 and the 2019 horror film Annabelle Comes Home.

It is also widely seen in the games Fallout 4 and Fallout 76, and features in horror writer Stephen King’s 1980 story The Monkey.

One also appears in the Wallace and Gromit 2008 short A Matter of Loaf and Death. A monkey with a bomb attached to its back features prominently in the Call of Duty franchise’s “Zombies” gamemode.

The 2006 Hot Chip song Over and Over references “a monkey with a miniature cymbal”.

The character Jinx from League of Legends has a big emotional connection to cymbal-banging monkeys. Other than explosions which give her happiness, cymbal-banging monkeys give her peace to her mentally ill mind. This connection can be seen in her starring 2021 animated series Arcane: League of legends.

Before the advent of refrigeration, crocks were used in American kitchens to hold foodstuffs such as butter, salted meats and pickled vegetables. The crocks were invariably made of stoneware, a durable, economical ceramic that remains water-tight, even without a glaze.
